Bears Win Home Opener in Style

GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado softball team won its home opener with a walk-off run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bears shut-out Kansas City, 8-0, on Friday afternoon at Gloria Rodriguez Field.
The game started as a pitcher's duel, with only a combined three hits through the first three and a half innings. UNC's batters came to life in the bottom of the fourth as Aimelee Morales hit a two-run homer to get the Bears on the board.
In the fifth inning, Alyssa Wenzel hit a sac fly to score Jaycie Gandert for the 3-0 lead.
The Bears then scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth for the early walk-off win. Carson Fischer recorded an RBI to score Baylie Kakallis from third. With the bases loaded, Wenzel hit a double to clear the bases and put the Bears up, 7-0.
Alexsi Barashkoff followed with a single up the middle to score Wenzel and to end the game at 8-0.
Erin Caviness pitched the six-inning shutout, conceding just two hits while striking out seven KC batters.
UP NEXT
The Bears finish the weekend with a doubleheader against the Roos tomorrow. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 10 a.m. (MT) at Gloria Rodriguez Field. The game is also UNC's Bark in the Park, sponsored by SCHEELS.
