UNC Splits First Day in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Northern Colorado softball team opened play at the Silicon Valley Classic with a split, taking a 7-2 victory over Saint Mary's before dropping a 7-0 loss to hosts San Jose State on Friday evening.
In the opening contest against the Gaels, UNC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Alexsi Barashkoff used a sac fly to score Lauren Strathearn, before Paola Villegas hit a triple to score Alyssa Wenzel. Later an error by the Gaels allowed Villegas to score the final run of the inning.
The Bears added three more on Saint Mary's in the fourth, as Barashkoff hit a double to left center to score Wenzel and Strathearn. Another error by the Gaels then scored Barashkoff to give the Bears a 6-0 lead.
Saint Mary's scored their first run of the game, albeit unearned, in the bottom of the sixth. The two teams then traded solo runs in the seventh to finish out the 7-2 win for the Bears.
In the nightcap, the Bears recorded five hits against the Spartans, but were unable to convert to get on the board.

UNC resumes competition at the Silicon Valley Classic tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 25, with an 11:30 a.m. (MT) game against UC Santa Barbara and a 4:30 p.m. game against Santa Clara.

- Erin Caviness picked up her fourth win of the season, improving to 4-1, throwing the complete game against the Gaels.
- Caviness conceded no earned runs in the 7-2 win against Saint Mary's
- Paola Villegas led the Bears at the bat, recording four hits in six at-bats, including three against the Gaels.
