Bears Lose to UCSB and Santa Clara on Day 2 of Silicon Valley Classic

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Northern Colorado softball team lost a pair of games on Saturday during the second day of competition of the Silicon Valley Classic, losing 9-1 to UC Santa Barbara and 10-4 to Santa Clara.
In the first game of the day against UCSB, the Gauchos used a 5-run second inning to take a big early lead. Paola Villegas recorded her fifth hit of the weekend in the third inning, which scored Alyssa Wenzel to get the Bears on the board. Unfortunately, it would be the only run for the Bears in the game as the Gauchos would go on to win 9-1 in five innings.
During the nightcap against Santa Clara, the Bears took a 3-0 lead in the third. Wenzel hit an RBI single to score Jaycie Gandert for the first run, and Alexsi Barashkoff singled to score Lauren Strathearn for the second run of the inning. Wenzel then used a distraction from Jayden Mercado stealing second, to steal home for the third run.
However, Santa Clara would go on to score nine runs over the third and fourth innings. Villegas then recorded her third RBI of the weekend to score Wenzel for the Bears' fourth and final run of the game.

UNC closes out the Silicon Valley Classic with a game against Saint Mary's tomorrow at 10 a.m. (MT).

- Lauren Strathearn batted .571 going 4-for-7 on the day.
- Alexsi Barashkoff was the third Bear to bat over .300, hitting .400 with two hits in five at-bats.
- Lainey Hanehan pitched 3 innings and only conceded one earned run.
