Northern Colorado Opens Season with Wins Over Colorado-Colorado Springs

"For being our first day outside I was thrilled with our level of competitiveness and composure" said UNC head baseball coach Mike Anderson. "The pitching staff did a great job in both wins of filling up the zone and throwing a lot of strikes. It was the very first time our hitters were outside and saw live pitching and they did a great job too. We are learning, faced adversity, and got a couple of wins."
In game one the Bears and Mountain Lions were tied at 6-6 in the seventh inning and UNC scored two runs in the seventh frame and six runs in the eighth inning to blow the game open and secure the 14-6 win.
Caden Wagner batted 1-for-4 and delivered a three-run home run, while Dom Palma went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and scored a pair of runs.
Dylan Smith (1-0) earned the start on the bump. Smith tossed six innings, scattered eight hits, and allowed six runs (three earned) and struck out two batters while walking none.
In game two the Bears jumped out to a 4-1 first-inning lead and didn't look back en route to a 12-4 seven-inning affair.
Wagner batted 2-for-6 with a home run and six RBI and James Wright finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Jake King, Austin Fisher, Hayden Heinze, Jackson Romero, and Palma each picked up hits.
Jake Tuttle (1-0) earned the win and threw four innings and scattered four hits, allowed three runs, and struck out a batter.
UP NEXT
The Bears and Mountain Lions complete their three-game series Sunday at noon. The match-up was originally set for 2 p.m.
