Bears top the Tar Heels in ‘UNC’ showdown

Northern Colorado 3, North Carolina 0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-12)
GREELEY, Colo. – Never trailing in either the first or the third set, Northern Colorado dispatched North Carolina in sweeping fashion inside the Bank of Colorado Arena on Saturday night.
Northern Colorado jumped out to a 6-1 edge and used a hyper efficient .542 hitting percentage to more than double up North Carolina, 25-11, in the opener.
The Tar Heels established a brief lead in the early stages of the second set, but only managed to hold the lead for three consecutive serves before the Bears tied the set at 3-3 thanks to a Michaela Boon ace.
After a 25-21 win the second, Northern Colorado once again posted a dominating wire-to-wire win with the final set resting at 25-12.
With the win, Northern Colorado improved to 2-0 on the year. Playing its third match in two days during their Colorado swing, North Carolina fell to 1-2 on the season. Landing just outside the top 25, North Carolina received 66 votes in the AVCA Preseason Coaches' Poll on August 15.
Overall, the Bears outhit the Tar Heels, .419 to .109.
One shy of her career high during a three-set match, Makenzie Harris led the attack with 15 kills. The senior added a team-high 11 digs for the 'double-double'.
Game Notes:
The Bears will face their first road test of the season on Tuesday, Aug. 30 when they make the short trip to face Colorado State University. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m. in Fort Collins.
