Torpey, Bears shutout Mavericks in Omaha
4/8/2022 8:23:00 PM | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. – Welcome back to the Summit League, Northern Colorado Baseball!
Sophomore Ian Torpey brought his A-game and then some to Omaha, dialing up a career performance as the Bears toppled the Mavericks, 1-0.
Right from the get-go, the Torrance, California native was locked in. Three up, three down with one strikeout in the first inning was a sign of things to come.
Hayden Heinze's made sure to pack his red-hot bat out east. The sophomore from Fort Collins, recorded two more hits, lifting his team-leading batting average to .323.
Not only did Heinze put pressure on Omaha but so did Shaydon Kubo, Garrett Fisher and Chase Cromer. Each recorded a multi-hit effort.
For Heinze, it was his seventh multi-hit game of the season and sixth for Kubo.
Despite the barrage of hits, Northern Colorado couldn't find the timely effort to squeeze a run across.
Enter Craig Kenny.
No batting gloves needed for Kenny as the starting catcher wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty in the top of the eighth inning. Clutch doesn't accurately describe his two-out RBI single that scored Cade Moeller.
Back on the bump, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better performance in all of Division I baseball than what Torpey did.
Pitching a career-high 8.0 innings, Torpey had the Mavericks asking more questions than a jeopardy host.
In the ninth inning, Logan Chase wasn't about to let his team leave Tal Anderson Field without a win. Trusting his defense behind him, Chase forced the game-ending double play, earning UNC's first shutout of the season, 1-0.
Game Notes
What's Ahead
Two more games in Omaha remain for the Bears before Northern Colorado returns to back to the Centennial State.
