Leading Off
Northern Colorado isn't afraid to swing the bat in the early parts of conference play. With a .338 team batting average in its first six league games, the Bears own the No. 1 spot in the Summit.
Freshman Jake King has made quite the impact in 2022. The Buckeye, Arizona native owns the top batting average (.478) and OPS (1.369) in the conference since league play began last month.
Hayden Heinze added yet another sacrifice bunt to his resume on Tuesday versus the Orediggers. His five sac bunts in 2022 rank as the second-most in the Summit League and No. 30 in the country.
Adding a 20th double play of the season against Mines, Northern Colorado has retaken the lead in the conference and leaped into the top-75 in the nation in the category.
Last Time Out
UNC shook off the rust after a week off at the Colorado School of Mines. Four different Bears recorded multiple hits against the Orediggers but it was Mines who came out on top, 11-8.
Scouting the Mavericks
It's been an impressive start to the 2022 campaign for sixth-year head coach Evan Porter. Omaha has already picked off wins against UCLA, Nebraska and Rutgers before embarking on a 4-2 start to Summit League play.
The highlight of this Omaha squad is its pitching staff. As a staff, the Mavericks carry a 4.22 ERA which ranks third in the conference. Caleb Riedel leads with way with a 0.98 ERA in six appearances. That mark is not only tops in the Summit but also ranks No. 8 in the nation.
As a team, Omaha has tallied four shutouts entering the weekend, the ninth-most in all of Division I baseball.
Offensively, it's sophomore Mike Boeve who sets the pace. His .378 batting average is No. 1 in the conference and top-100 in the country.
History against Omaha
All-time, UNC is 20-22 against its old NCC foe in Omaha. The Bears have won five consecutive against the Mavericks and bring an even 8-8 record into the weekend.
Looking Ahead
Northern Colorado will play a midweek contest at Air Force before returning to Jackson Field to take on South Dakota State next weekend.
