GOLDEN, Colo. – Northern Colorado fought the Colorado School of Mines and mother nature for nine innings but it was the Orediggers who came out on top, 11-8.
Mines jumped on the Bears early. Three runs in the first inning and two in the second had UNC playing from behind early.
The Blue and Gold were up to the task, though.
Three times, Northern Colorado loaded the bases to put pressure on the Orediggers in the fourth inning. Shaydon Kubo, Josh Glenn and Garrett Fisher all delivered RBI as UNC put up a five-spot to tie the game.
The home side retaliated with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth, hung up another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Head coach Carl Iwasaki's Bears didn't come to Golden just for kicks.
Jake King dialed up a sacrifice fly in the fifth, Chase Cromer's RBI double tacked on another in the sixth and Kubo utilized his prolific speed to score on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Twice UNC climbed within a run of Mines but couldn't find the timely hit to take the lead.
Both Craig Kenny and Cameron Cromer notched infield singles in the top of the final frame but Northern Colorado's comeback effort fell short, handing the win to the Orediggers, 11-8.
Game Notes
It's back to the Summit League for the Bears as UNC heads to Omaha for a three-game set with the Mavericks over the weekend.
