SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – A trip to the City of Arches is just what the doctor ordered.
Josh Glenn blasted his first home run of the season, Jack Tuttle spun a gem on the mound and the Bears defense never wavered, all leading to a 5-2 victory over Saint Louis, UNC's first of the season.
Head coach Carl Iwasaki's crew made their intentions quite clear in the top end of the first inning.
What started with a Carson Gross walk turned into a big inning for the Bears. Josh Glenn followed up with a walk of his own then Jake King took one for the team, as did Garrett Fisher, giving the sophomore an RBI and UNC its first run of the game.
Northern Colorado's first hit didn't come until Cameron Cromer singled to shortstop to tack on a second run and all of the sudden, the Blue and Gold were playing from out front.
On the bump, Riley Bost earned his third-straight start. Bost cruised through the first and second innings, posting three strikeouts along the way.
In the third, Saint Louis found themselves with the bases loaded but the right-hander out of Texas calmly ended the inning with a punchout and a fly out to leave the Billikens stranded.
An inning later, the home side was threatening once more, plating a run after a triple. Jack Tuttle took the keys on the mound but before he was able to retire the side, SLU tied the game up at two.
The Freshman stood barely wavered after the fourth frame. In fact, the Torrance, California native mowed down 10 batters in a row.
Even though the Tuttle issued a walk to begin the eighth inning, his defense picked him up quickly, turning its sixth double play of the inning to wipe the bases clean.
UNC's defense was flexing its muscles all afternoon in Saint Louis. While Bost struck out four, Tuttle added just one and the Bears in the field refused to commit an error.
Tuttle trotted out to the rubber one last time in the ninth to put the game to bed. Though the Billikens threatened with runners on second and third, Tuttle called his own number, forcing a groundout to himself to give Northern Colorado its first win of the season, 5-2.
