Leading Off
Northern Colorado's freshman arms have been impressive in the early parts of 2022. Kevin Sharp, Owen Lockner and Jack Tuttle have all saw meaningful time during the Bears' west coast road trip. Sharp leads the pack, boasting an 0.93 ERA with four strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work.
UNC's defense has relished the opportunity to turn double plays this season. The Bears have turned two five times, including two from the all-Cromer duo, which ranks as the second-most in the Summit League to date.
Fans of the Blue and Gold can count on at least one strikeout per inning from the Bears' pitching staff. With 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings, only Oral Roberts ranks better entering the weekend.
Northern Colorado base runners remain perfect in stolen base attempts this season. To date, the Bears are 7-7 across its first nine games.
Last Time Out
UNC's freshman continued to pitch well while Craig Kenny and Jacob Banister each notched a home run in the four-game series with Saint Mary's but the Bears are still looking for its first victory of the season.
Scouting the Billikens
Head coach Darin Hendrickson enters his 15th season at the helm of the Saint Louis baseball program. His squad enters the weekend with a 1-5 record and dropped all three games to fellow Summit League member Oral Roberts.
Offensively, the Billikens are led by senior Kyle Fitzgerald. The Brookfield, Illinois native is batting a robust .412 in the early parts of 2022, good enough for third-best in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He also leads the team with four doubles and 11 total bases.
Matt Happ and Cameron Swanger also average above .300 at the dish. The three heavy hitters combine for 10 of SLU's 30 RBI on the season.
Saint Louis' pitching staff will lead off with Ryan Patel, who's pitched a meager 1.2 innings but has recorded three strikeouts and surrendered zero walks. Fans will keep an eye on Sunday starter Trevor Harris. The senior has 11.0 innings under his best already and owns a 4.91 ERA.
History against Saint Louis
UNC and SLU have only met for one series in the history of the two programs. Back in 2015, the Billikens took all three contests from the Bears.
Looking Ahead
Home at last. Northern Colorado returns to Greeley for its home opener against Mount Marty University. The four-game series begins on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. MT.
