Track and Field Starts Outdoor Season With Top 20 National Preformances

BOULDER, Colo. and PALO ALTO, Calif.- UNC Track and Field had solid showings this weekend as the team was split between meets hosted by Colorado and Stanford. Overall, the team earned 12 top-three finishes at the two meets including four top 20 national performances.

The Bears' strongest performances of the weekend came from the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder on Friday and Saturday. Multiple Bears won their events at the meet including Welre Olivier in the triple jump with a distance of 15.29m. Olivier's jump is the best in the Big Sky and ranks 12th in the NCAA early in the outdoor season.

Teammate Qwazon Al-Khaliq has the second-best triple jump in the Big Sky and 19th in the nation with his mark of 15.12m at the Cardinal Classic. He took second at the meet.

On the women's side, Melodie Leroudier and Regina Mpigachai rank in the top 20 nationally for the 5k and 800m, respectively. Both ran at the Cardinal Classic. Lerouider is 15th in the nation with her time of 16:53.90 to secure third place at the meet.

Freshman Regina Mpigachai finished second-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:09.91. That places her 19th in the nation.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Sabrina Richman, Anya Turner, Julia Brown, and Shantell Hafner, took first place at the Jerry Quiller Classic with a time of 4:12.33. Hailey Harris kept the wins coming, securing first place in both the long and triple jump as well.

Other podium finishes in Boulder included Sabrina Richman in the 400m, Julia Brown in the 800m, and Samantha Rodgers in the javelin, all earning third place.

In California, Craiesha Johnson took third in the 400m hurdles and Jerome Campbell in 110m hurdles.

The team will go on to compete in the Oregon Premiere Invitational on April 2 hosted by the University of Oregon.
