SAN JOSE, Calif. – It just wasn't Northern Colorado's day in the Bay Area on Tuesday. Even though Garrett Fisher extended his reached base streak to five games and Jake King recorded his first RBI as a Bear, UNC fell to the Spartans, 14-3.
San Jose State struck first in the bottom of the first, plating three runs on two hits and an error.
Starting pitcher Ashton Mansur righted the ship in the second and third innings, though. The senior from Littleton, Colorado set the side down in order in the second and stranded a Spartan runner in the third to keep things close.
It was the hustle of Cameron Cromer that produced a run in the top half of the third. Cromer showcased his prolific speed on a slow roller to second, beat the throw and then scampered to second base after an SJSU error.
Two batters later after a Gerald Nervis Jr. sacrifice bunt, Hayden Heinze brought in Cromer for his first RBI of the season.
SJSU opened the game up in the middle parts of the contest, scoring six runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to stretch its lead.
The Bears went after the San Jose State starter in the seventh. What started as a walk from Carson Gross turned into the Bears' largest inning of the afternoon.
Back-to-back singles from Jake King and Craig Kenny brought in Gross and Garrett Fisher to put a two-spot on the scoreboard.
Carson Gross snagged a web gem late but by then, the damage was done with the Bears falling, 14-3.
Game Notes
Northern Colorado travels driving north to Moraga for a four-game set with Saint Mary's beginning on Friday.
