UNC's offense comes alive, can't find way past Saint Mary's during doubleheader

MORAGA, Calif. – Northern Colorado's bats are starting to defrost in California but it wasn't enough to catch Saint Mary's as UNC dropped both games of its Friday doubleheader.
Game 1
Riley Bost earned his second Friday start in the Blue and Gold and kicked off the game with a solid first couple of innings.
Saint Mary's plated two runs in the third and fourth innings and one in fifth but only three of them were earned.
In total, Bost pitched 5.0 complete innings with four strikeouts.
UNC finally posted a run in the fifth inning thanks to redshirt-senior Josh Glenn. After a Carson Gross two-out single, Glenn drove the sophomore in with an RBI double to close the gap.
Freshman Jack Tuttle took the reins for Bost in the sixth. The young righty out of Torrance, California retired the first eight batters he saw, keeping the Gaels at bay for the time being.
Even when pressed in the top of the eighth with two runners in scoring position, Tuttle responded with his third strikeout in three innings.
Northern Colorado did load the bases following back-to-back singles from Heinze and Shaydon Kubo, and a walk from Chase Cromer. However, the Bears were unable to provide some late-game magic and dropped the first game, 5-1.
Game 2
Ian Torpey once again began his afternoon with a solid performance initially. On more than one occasion, Torpey found a clutch strikeout to end an inning.
The San Jose, California native fanned five Saint Mary's batters on his afternoon.
After the Gaels had posted three runs in the third, the UNC bats came alive in the fourth.
Craig Kenny stepped to the plate with Jake King on first thanks to his base knock. With one swing of the bat, Kenny brought the Bears within one, smashing Northern Colorado's first home run of the season to left field.
Even though SMC platted a fourth run in the bottom end of the inning, head coach Carl Iwasaki's crew battled right back in the fifth. Already with one RBI on the afternoon, Josh Glenn delivered a second, scoring Heinze to bring UNC back within one, 4-3.
The wheels came off in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, though. Saint Mary's capitalized for seven and five runs, respectively.
Before the Bears' nine innings were up, however, sophomore Jacob Banister not only registered his first career hit in a Blue and Gold uniform but did so by rocketing a home run over the fence.
