Bears set sights on Gaels for final series of California road trip

GREELEY, Colo. – UNC Baseball wraps up its Sunshine State road trip this weekend with four games on deck against Saint Mary's

Northern Colorado has been able to showcase some speed on the bases in the early parts of 2022. UNC ranks second in the Summit and 63rd in the nation with six stolen bases this season.
The Bears' pitching staff has made a habit out of striking its opponents out. With a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.11, Northern Colorado ranks first in the conference and No. 123 in the country.
Garrett Fisher, UNC's do-everything something, has lived up to the billing this season. Fisher has reached base safely in all five games of 2022, leads the team with five free passes and three runs scored.
Northern Colorado's defense is starting to round into form. With a double play in each of the last two games, UNC has turned two more than any other team in the Summit League.
Last Time Out
Northern Colorado clashed with San Jose State on Tuesday, falling 14-3 to the Spartans.
Scouting the Gaels
Saint Mary's is coming off a dominant opening weekend that saw the Gaels sweep in-state foe UC Davis. Across the three-game series, head coach Greg Moore's crew allowed a combined six runs and boasts an era of 1.33 to begin the season.
Sophomore Gavin Napier led SMC with six hits in his 12 at-bats, including a double, a triple and four RBI. Christopher Campos was close behind with five hits and three free passes across the weekend.
The Saint Mary's pitching staff will be led by junior Ryan Tourek. Tourek worked 2.1 innings of relief last weekend against the Aggies, striking gout three and allowing just one hit. As a sophomore, the Santa Ana, California native made nine starts, earning a 3-3 record with a 4.55 ERA.
History against Saint Mary's
The Bears are Gaels have only met once in program history. Back in 1978, Saint Mary's got the better of UNC, 9-4, in a tournament hosted by UNLV.
Looking Ahead
Head coach Carl Iwasaki's crew will pass through Greeley and continue to swing east next weekend with a four-game series at Saint Louis on the horizon.
