STOCKTON, Calif. – Multiple Bears made their Northern Colorado debut and Ian Torpey shined in his first start of the season but UNC wasn't able to find a win on Saturday in California.
GAME 1
The Bears went right to business to lead off the first inning of game number one.
After earning his first collegiate hit as a Bear, Cameron Cromer showcased what he's capable of on the base paths. Cromer promptly stole third following a Josh Glenn single and forced an error out of the Pacific defense to earn a trip home and put UNC on top, 1-0.
Turning to the mound, Ian Torpey pitched a gem for four straight innings. Six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work kept Northern Colorado's one-run lead intact.
Hayden Heinze got things going in the top of the fifth. His single ignited the UNC offense.
Josh Glenn and Garrett Fisher both recorded RBI as the fun was just getting started. Lincoln Turner walked in a run for an RBI and Cade Moeller found an RBI single to cap off a four-run inning and Northern Colorado's largest lead of the weekend and 5-0.
The Tigers pushed across four runs in the bottom half, however, closing the gap.
Owen Lockner and Logan Chase locked things down for the next couple of innings. The duo combined three innings and two strikeouts.
Two runs on two hits in the eighth let Pacific leapfrog the Bears for the lead, 6-5, though. The Bears weren't able to mount a comeback in the ninth and surrendered the first game of the day.
GAME 2
Pacific drew first blood in the second game of the day. Two runs in the bottom of the opening frame had Northern Colorado playing from behind early.
Back-to-back doubles in the second inning, however, gave the Bears the spark it needed. Cade Moeller secured the first and then trotted home thanks to Carson Gross' RBI extra-base hit.
Fast forward to the third inning and head coach Carl Iwasaki's crew had intentions of tying up the affair or even taking the lead. Adding to his impressive weekend, Hayden Heinze forced an error out of the Tigers and scampered home to even the score, 2-2.
The home side came back with a vengeance, though.
Scoring runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, the Tigers quickly found some separation.
With the Bears unable to find a rally, Pacific secured its second win of the day, 12-2.
Game Notes
One more game remains in the series with Pacific. The Bears and Tigers will go at it at 2 p.m. MT. Northern Colorado travels to San Jose for a midweek contest on Tuesday before driving north to Moraga for a four-game set with Saint Mary's.
