Leading Off
Northern Colorado begins its 2022 campaign behind the right arm of Riley Bost. The UT Arlington transfer arrives in Greeley with 26 total appearances for the Mavericks. In 2021, Bost allowed one run or fewer in eight appearances on the mound.
Josh Glenn returns for his final season (third as a Bear). The 2021 Buster Posey Award nominee and recent top-50 catcher selection by D1Baseball.com led UNC in doubles (10), RBI (42) and walks (24) a season ago.
Last season, Dan Martony's crew were one of the best in striking out its opponents. At 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings, UNC was No. 1 in the WAC and No. 111 in the country.
While junior Hayden Heinze led the team in batting average last season (.337), Shaydon Kubo carries a three-game hit streak into the year dating back to last season.
Last Time Out
We haven't seen Northern Colorado in action since the finale of the 2021 season. Catcher Josh Glenn eclipsed the 40 RBI mark for the year with a three-run homer against Dixie State but it wasn't enough to get by the Trailblazers.
Scouting the Tigers
Head coach Chris Rodriguez enters his third year at the helm of the Pacific program. The Tigers were picked to finish 10th in the West Coast Conference this season.
Third baseman Thomas Gavello was tabbed as one of the top-50 in his position by D1Baseball.com. The Danville, California native also landed on the WCC All-preseason team.
Right-hander Elijah Birdsong will lead the rotation this season. Pacifc gets the senior back after a year off. In 2020, he pitched three games with one start.
Offensively, the Tigers are led by James Arakawa who hit .339 a season ago and led the team with nine stolen bases.
History against Pacific
Northern Colorado and Pacific have only met once, back in 2016. The Tigers took two of three in that series.
Looking Ahead
The Bears will remain in sunny California with a midweek adventure at San Jose State before driving north to Moraga for a four-game series with Saint Mary's.
