SACRAMENTO—Getting a pair of early 4th-down stops on defense, Northern Colorado stayed within a score after the 1st quarter to No. 4-ranked Sacramento State before falling to the Hornets, 55-7, on Saturday.
With the win to improve to 5-0 on the season, Sacramento State remains one of three undefeated teams in the Big Sky.
Northern Colorado (2-4, 1-2 Big Sky) will return home next week when they host No. 5-ranked Montana State University on Oct. 15. Opening kick against the Bobcats is set for 1:02 p.m. at Nottingham Field.
On the Hornets' opening possession, Keyvon Lakes and Joe Brown combined to sack Sacramento State quarterback Jake Dunniway to force the initial turnover. Moments later, the UNC defense forced a second change of possession with an incomplete pass on 4th-and-6.
The Sacramento State defense, however, held the Bears without a first down in the first half en route to building a 24-0 lead at the break.
The UNC defense came up with another stop midway through the 3rd quarter when Elijah Taylor-Anderson forced his third fumble of the season. The Bears took advantage of the turnover with a 5-play drive capped by an Elijah Dotson touchdown, his sixth of the season.
