Scouting the Vikings
Head coach Katie Burton kicked off her 2021 Fall season with a resounding 4-2 win over Sacramento State. Now in her fifth season at the helm of the Viking program, Burton brings a squad into Greeley with a 3-5-0 record that includes a 3-1 win over CSUN and a narrow 0-1 loss to the Pac-12's Oregon.
Portland State enters the weekend as one of the most physical teams in the conference. With eight yellow cards and 8.25 fouls per game, PSU ranks second and third in those categories, respectively.
Freshman phenom Abi Hoffman is coming off her first-career hat trick against Sacramento State. Her three goals also leapfrogged the Troutdale, Oregon native into the team lead.
Meanwhile, Ani Jensen is one of six players in the Big Sky with two game-winning goals this season.
History against Portland State
With the split divisions last spring, the Bears and Vikings didn't match up last season. Although UNC holds a 6-8-1 all-time record against Portland State, Northern Colorado has won three of the last five meetings, including one tie.
Scouting the Hornets
Head coach Randy Dedini has spent each of his 15 seasons in Sacramento, compiling a 107-116-43 record. This season, the Hornets enter the weekend with a 1-6-2 mark, its lone win coming over the Mountain West's Nevada.
Like Portland State, the Hornets are lead by a Freshman in Abigail Lopez. Lopez has tallied three goals this season, scoring in the win over Nevada, one against CSU Bakersfield and recently netted one against Portland State.
Defensively, goalkeeper Katie Price ranks fourth in the Big Sky in saves per game with 5.43.
History against Sacramento State
The Bears have a similar record against Sacramento State (6-8-3). However, prior to UNC's loss in Sacramento in 2019, Northern Colorado had won three consecutive matchups against the Hornets, including a 2-0 win in the Big Sky Tournament in 2017.
Last Time Out
Northern Colorado is off to a perfect start to its 2021 Big Sky Season. Following a 3-1 win over Southern Utah, the Bears marched into Flagstaff and emerged with a 2-0 win over the preseason favorites. Two second-half goals from senior Lexi Pulley sealed the deal as Ashley Franza pitched a shutout in goal.
On this Day
UNC will be looking to even its record on October 1 (3-4-0). However, the Bears are 2-1-0 on the date at home in Jackson Stadium. October 3 has been far more fruitful for Northern Colorado (5-2-0). From 1996 to 2003, UNC posts four straight wins on the date.
