Volleyball continues hot streak in Colorado, sweeping Denver
9/2/2021 7:50:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
DENVER, Colo. – Colorado continues to look a little more Blue and Gold.
Fresh off defeating Colorado State for the first time in 39 years, the Bears pulled off another upset, sweeping Denver, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17).
Both teams came out swinging in the first set. Midway through the opening frame, each team was hitting north of .300.
Freshman Maddie Davies, who earned the first start of her career, played brilliantly up front. Two quick kills and a number of touches at the net settled the Greenacres, Washington native into her first action as a Bear.
Along with the newbie, Lauren Strain and Makenzie Harris led with four kills apiece. Meanwhile, Kyndall Feather and Laura Katarzynski cranked up the pressure from the service line. The two each grabbed an ace en route to UNC's first set win, 25-21.
Northern Colorado's aggressive serving continued to open the second set. Though the Bears didn't record many early aces, the fierce effort from the service line forced Denver out of system, allowing the likes of Hickman, Ince and Strain to go work.
While Denver hit a flat .000 in the second, the Bears managed an even .200, taking a commanding 2-0 lead.
Following a flurry of plays at the net for Strain, UNC rattled off nine consecutive points to take a commanding lead in the third.
In the end, Northern Colorado was too much for Denver. Davies hit a team-high .545, Strain hit .500 and Ince added .348 to help the Bears sweep the Pioneers.
