LEADING OFF
Two WAC series remain on the schedule and UNC sits tied for eighth place with Seattle at 7-17. With California Baptist, Dixie State and Tarleton all missing out on the postseason this year, a ninth-place finish for the Bears earns a trip to Mesa, Arizona, for the 2021 Conference Tournament.
In Northern Colorado's 15-9 win over Tarleton last Friday, the Bears impressively produced two grand slams in the third inning (Shaydon Kubo and Josh Glenn). It was just the second time in Division I baseball this season a team has had two grannies in the same inning.
Since entering the starting lineup midweek against Kansas State last month, Hayden Heinze has been on an absolute tear. Apart from providing some solid defense in center field, Heinze is batting .483 in his last 10 games, including .642, three doubles and three RBI against Tarleton over the weekend.
According to 6-4-3 Charts, Josh Glenn is the eighth-most clutch hitter in Division I Baseball with runners in scoring position. Glenn, who is currently third in the WAC in RBI with 38, is batting a heroic .486 with RISP.
The Bears' big right-hander Dylan Bowers continues to mow down batters in 2021. The Centennial, Colorado native sits third in the conference in strikeouts with 70, just nine behind Scott Randall of Sacramento State and Pierson Ohl of Grand Canyon.
Shaydon Kubo's four triples on the season is the most in the WAC and tenth-most in the nation entering the weekend.
As a staff, UNC pitchers rank second in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings with 9.0.
Matt Burkart is tied for second in the WAC with eight home runs.
SCOUTING THE UTES
Entering the weekend, Utah sits tenth in the PAC-12 standings. The Utes have already posted wins against Cal State Fullerton, Stanford, Cal, Oregon State and fellow WAC member Utah Valley. However, head coach Bill Kinneberg will be looking to get his squad back on track after suffering a sweep by No. 10 Arizona.
Kyle Robeniol remains one of the most consistent arms in the conference. In 44.2 innings of work this season, Robeniol's 6.67 strikeout to walk ratio is best in the PAC-12 and 32nd in the nation.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a better middle infield than Utah's. With 38 double plays (1.08 per game), Kinneberg's defense ranks best in the conference and top-10 in the nation in both categories.
A LOOK AHEAD.
Northern Colorado will remain on the road for its final two WAC series of the season. The Bears will face UT Rio Grande Valley in a four-game set, beginning on May 14.
