GREELEY, Colo. – One last weekend of regular-season games remain for Northern Colorado Soccer. UNC heads to Ogden for two matchups against Weber State slated for Friday and Sunday.
Heading into the weekend, head coach Tim Barrera's group needs just one point from two matches to secure a spot in next week's Big Sky Tournament. A win and a tie would solidify the No. 1 seed in the Southeast division.
The Bears are coming off a solid weekend against the Lumberjacks of NAU. Down two goals to nil, Northern Colorado stormed back in the second half to tie the first game at two. UNC's miraculous effort included a goal in the final seconds directly resulting from a Maddie Barkow flip throw. Though it will technically go down as an own goal, it was the effort of Lexi Pulley that saved a point. Northern Colorado utilized another big second half to roll to a 3-1 victory in the second matchup.
UNC scored five goals across two games against Northern Arizona, coming from four different goal scorers. Kalen Niedling, Olivia Seddon, MacKenzie Bray and Kaitlyn Meeder all found the back of the net.
Along with dialing up seven saves, junior goalkeeper Ashley Franza also found herself in the assist column. The San Ramon, California native spotted Meeder making a run and booted a ball nearly 75-yards in the air, releasing Meeder who calmly finished off one of the most spectacular goals of the season.
Through five games, both Maddie Barkow and Olivia Seddon have collected two assists. At a rate of .40 per game, the dynamic duo is tied for first in the Big Sky Conference.
Graduate student Olivia Seddon left no doubt on her penalty kick in the Bears' win over the Lumberjacks. Seddon is now 2-2 in PK's during the regular season in her career.
Scouting Weber State
First-year head coach Craig Sanders has his squad off to a 3-3-2 start this season. The Wildcats impressively walked away with a tie against Utah and only lost 1-0 to Colorado in non-conference play.
Much like UNC, WSU has spread the wealth offensively. Seven different Wildcats have recorded a goal in 2021 and six different players have tallied an assist. Senior Jasmine Lotey remains the only player to score multiple goals with two.
A look ahead
Should Northern Colorado secure a point across its two games against Weber State, the Bears will earn a spot in next week's conference tournament. The first round begins on Wednesday, April 15.
