Bears drop two against Lopes, eye series split Sunday

GREELEY, Colo. – Following Cooper Rust's gritty performance on Friday, Northern Colorado Baseball was looking for more of the same on Saturday. It was Grand Canyon, however, who grabbed both games of the doubleheader.
Starting pitcher Jacob Salim did his best Rust impersonation for the first two innings, giving up just one hit.
The Lopes broke through in the third, though, pushing across three runs on three hits.
In total, Salim pitched four full innings and struck out one while giving up three runs.
Offensively, UNC searched for someone to provide a spark. Jake Gitter and Matt Burkart each grabbed a hit, Burkart a double, but no one else could find any magic at the dish.
In relief of Salim, Billy Moreland took a turn on the bump for two frames. Moreland gave up one unearned run as GCU marched to a swift 4-0 victory in the first game.
Grand Canyon picked up right where it left off to begin the second game of the day.
The Lopes jumped on Bowers for four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the first.
Northern Colorado had its share of runners throughout the second contest. UNC left someone on in each of the first six innings. In total, the Bears left nine players on base.
After the first inning, Bowers settled into a groove and did his best to give his offense a chance at the plate. The big right-hander ended up going seven full innings, struck out six and walked just one.
Matt Burkart continued his hot day, tallying two hits and a walk on the evening.
Daylon Matthews picked up where Bowers left off, pitching a near-perfect eighth inning with a strikeout.
In the end, it just wasn't Northern Colorado's day at the plate as the Lopes captures its second straight game over the Bears, 5-0.
