Baseball home opener features future Summit League foe South Dakota State

GREELEY, Colo. – Fresh off its first two wins of the season, Northern Colorado Baseball is back at Jackson Field for its home opener.
Who: Northern Colorado (2-1, 0-0) vs. South Dakota State (1-2, 0-0)
When: February 26-28

LEADING OFF
Northern Colorado returns to Jackson Field for its home opener against future Summit League foe South Dakota State.
The Bears matched its longest game in program history last weekend versus Colorado Christian. UNC went 15 innings with CCU, previously going the same distance against Sam Houston State in 2010.
With Sunday's win over the Cougars, head coach Carl Iwasaki reached 300 career wins. Iwasaki is also three wins shy of 200 Division-I victories, ranking fourth on the all-time list at Northern Colorado.
Senior outfielder Jake Gitter was electric on opening weekend down in Lakewood. The New Orleans native went 7-13 from the dish with three home runs, six RBI, a double and two stolen bases.
Josh Glenn wasn't too far behind. UNC's sure-handed catcher was 7-10 at the plate with a double, eight RBI and three stolen bases.
Jacob Salim impressed on his debut in the Blue and Gold over the weekend. Salim pitched three full innings, striking out four and surrendering zero earned runs.
Sam Leach picked up where he left off last season on the mound. In the second of a doubleheader on Saturday, Leach went five full innings, striking out five, giving up zero walks and just one run in the win.
The speedy UNC baserunners were 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts versus CCU.
SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
The Jacks were tabbed to finish fourth in the Summit this year. Head coach Rob Bishop welcomes back a talented roster that includes two players voted on the Summit League Watch List. Drew Beazley earned Freshman All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball in 2019, batting .271 with 21 RBI.
At the top of the rotation SDSU, sophomore Adam Mazur pitched in 20.1 innings in 2020, striking out 18 batters.

Northern Colorado will stay at home next weekend, welcoming another Summit League opponent in North Dakota State.
