GREELEY, Colo. – It just wasn't the Bears' day.
Despite a strong effort from starter Dylan Bowers, Northern Colorado Baseball's home opener was spoiled by South Dakota State, 12-0.
In just his second start of the season, Bowers found himself right at home early at Jackson Field.
The big right-hander cruised through the first three innings, mowing down Jackrabbit batters left and right. Bowers finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts in five and a third innings.
An inning later, the Jacks went back to work, pushing across five runs on three hits and an error when Lincoln Turner lost track of the ball in the sun in left field.
Northern Colorado threatened to score in the bottom of the sixth as Shaydon Kubo and Jake Gitter climbed aboard safely with singles. UNC left the duo stranded on the corners, however, leaving the Bears without a run for another frame.
Three more came across in the seventh before the Bears went 1-2-3 in the bottom half, handing them their second loss of the season.
