Opening Tip
Hannah Simental led Northern Colorado in its opener with 12 points against the Sun Devils. The sophomore, who at one point last season was third in the nation in three-point shooting percentage, began her campaign with a 2-4 effort beyond the arc.
After a year off, Kurstyn Harden impressed in her reemergence as a Bear, putting up eight points and pulling down seven rebounds. Her seven boards were just two shy of her career-high, while her two assists were a career-best for the Lufkin, Texas product.
Jayce Gorzeman, Sabine Lipe, Sydney Stensgard, Zoe Campbell, Allie Downing and Callie Boyles all made their debuts for Northern Colorado and each scored their first points in the Blue and Gold.
Of the 11 players that earned minutes against Arizona State, 10 of them found the bottom of the basket.
Scouting the Rams
Head coach Ryun Williams opened his 10th season at the helm of the Colorado State program with a 77-42 victory over Colorado Christian. Freshman guard Anna Prim led the way as four Rams finished in double figures against the Cougars. Defensively, CSU held Colorado Christian to 29 percent shooting and just 6-20 from downtown.
Colorado State was picked to finish fourth, receiving one first-place vote, behind Fresno State, New Mexico and UNLV. Junior Mckenna Hofschild was named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team. The 2020-21 conference newcomer of the year averaged 13.4 points and 5.4 assists a season ago.
Last season, the Rams ranked first in the Mountain West and fifth in the nation in assist to turnover ratio. CSU also pounded the glass, pulling down 30.8 defensive rebounds per contest, best in the conference and sixth-best in the country.
History against Colorado State
