FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Northern Colorado came ready to play in Fort Collins on Friday evening and senior guard Alexis Chapman reached 1,000 career points but the Rams ran away late as the Bears dropped the contest to its in-state rival, 61-50.
The Bears came out of the gates on all cylinders. Jaiden Galloway, earning her first start of the season, paved the way with two early threes.
In fact, the senior from Aurora, Colorado eclipsed her career-high for three-pointers with three in the first half alone.
As a team, the Bears were 6-14 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes, leading to its 30-20 lead at the break.
Defensively, Northern Colorado was equally as stout. Mattio's high-flying zone forced the Rams into 11 attempts from downtown with CSU only able to make two of them.
UNC also had the glass in Moby Arena looking spotless in the first half, outrebounding Colorado State 23-12.
Colorado State began to fight back in the third quarter, though. The Rams were 8-15 from the field while UNC's shooting percentage dipped below 35.
Still though, strong efforts from Kurstyn Harden, Hannah Simental and Alexis Chapman kept CSU from taking the lead.
Chapman was teetering on the edge of 1,000 kills for her career coming into the season, and as the senior turned in her best performance of the young season, she finally eclipsed the landmark. Chapman is the 20th Bear to do so.
Entering the fourth quarter, Colorado State had hit just three shots from beyond the arc. Four in the final 10 minutes sent CSU on a 10-0 and its first lead game.
Mattio's squad never gave up, though. Even though the Rams put the game on ice from the charity stripe, the Bears fought until the bitter end, eventually coming up short, 61-50.
