Northern Colorado went 4-1 in its home tournament
Northern Colorado finished off its home tournament in style Sunday afternoon, defeating Nebraska-Omaha, 9-1 in five innings.
"After the first game [of the weekend], I wasn't sure what was going to happen," head coach Ben Garcia said. "To be able to respond like that, I think that builds a lot of character and our freshmen are growing up. Taking four games is important to build this program where it needs to be and that's exciting for us."Â
Erin Caviness was in the circle for UNC and she faced the Mavericks Sydney Hampton.
A pair of errors by Omaha left field put UNC on the board in the bottom of the first Alyssa Wenzel reached and advanced to second on the first error. She stole third and on the next pitch Mady Young brought her home with a frozen rope to the wall in left center. Young made it 2-0 UNC on the second error of the inning.
The Mavericks cut the UNC lead in half with a solo home run in the top of the second.
Northern Colorado extended its lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second. Brandi Haller walked to extend the inning before UNC had three straight hits including back-to-back doubles by Wenzel and Young. Wenzel's drove home one and Young brought home two more runs to extend the lead to 5-1 over the Mavericks.
Omaha threatened in the top of the fourth, putting two on with two outs, but Caviness got a fly out to end the threat.
UNC would end the game early in the bottom of the fifth, finishing off the Mavericks with four runs on four hits in another two out rally. Reyna Caudillo led off the inning with a single to center field and Paola Villegas followed up with another single for two on with no outs. Natalie Joyner reached on a bunt attempt to load the bases. Emma Brockmann hit a sac fly to left field and allowed pinch-runner, Amanda Hedges to score. Lauren Strathearn delivered the knock-out hit, tripling to left field to bring in three runs and extend the lead to 9-1. With the eight-run rule in effect, UNC won the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Caviness earned her third win after pitching five innings and allowing only one earned run.
"Since the start of the season, we have been having trouble with two-outs," Garcia said. "This weekend and last weekend, we had a lot of two-out hits and that was big."
