Overtime Thriller Ends in Heartbreak for Bears

Northern Colorado fell short in overtime, 68-55, against Southern Utah
Northern Colorado women's basketball and Southern Utah needed more than 40 minutes to decide their game on Thursday night. UNC and SUU went into overtime tied at 53, but the Thunderbirds were able to get a 68-55 win over the Bears.
The game was close throughout, with 21 lead changes and 10 ties. Alisha Davis was a force for UNC, matching her career high with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Davis also posted her fourth double-double, with a career high, 15 rebounds.
SUU's Rebecca Cardenas dropped a game-high, 30 points on UNC to spark the win for the Thunderbirds. UNC committed 21 turnovers, that SUU was able to turn into 18 points.
After a shaky start in the first quarter, UNC turned on their game with 2:53 left in the first. The Bears closed the quarter on an 8-0 run with Davis scoring six of the team's points. UNC was up 14-12 after the first 10 minutes and shot 63.6 percent.
In the second quarter the game remained tight, as both had some difficulty scoring. UNC finished the quarter with a 31.3 percent shooting mark and SUU was 33.3 percent from the floor. The Thunderbirds outscored the Bears 13-10 in the quarter to take a 25-24 lead into halftime. Cardenas scored 11 points in the quarter for the Thunderbirds. Bridget Hintz kept UNC in the game with six points on 2-of-4 shooting.
The back-and-forth game continued in the third quarter. A 7-0 run by the Bears at the seven-minute mark gave UNC the lead. Alexis Chapman contributed four points for the Bears to build the small lead. The Thunderbirds would continue to score in the period and retook the lead. UNC was down 42-41 heading to the fourth.
Now in the fourth quarter, UNC would have five players score and the Bears would hold a three-point lead in the game with 29 seconds left. Cardenas would tie the game on the next possession and drew a foul. UNC was fortunate that the Big Sky leader missed the free-throw. The Bears had a chance at the buzzer to win the game, but Chapman missed her jump shot. The game moved to overtime with the score tied at 53.

UNC's record dropped to 5-6 in conference and 9-11 overall this season.

- This was the first overtime game for UNC since Jan. 7, 2019 against Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash. UNC won the game, 67-62.
- Northern Colorado's defense held SUU to a 34 percent shooting night. The team's defense in the paint was just as strong, as the Thunderbirds were held to a 38.1 percent mark.
- UNC out-rebounded Southern Utah, 49-42 and had a 40-32 scoring advantage in the paint. Alisha Davis' 15 rebounds was a game high, along with being her career high.
- Ali Meyer was 4-of-5 from the floor, good for eight points and added four rebounds with two blocks.
