UNC track and field heads to the Big Sky Championship February 27-29
POCATELLO, Idaho – Northern Colorado track and field heads into the Big Sky Indoor Championships ready to prove the preseason polls wrong. UNC enters the week with 10 top five performances this season and 19 top 10.
Prior to the indoor season beginning the conference, coaches picked both UNC's men's and women's team to finish in 10th place, but that has already been proven wrong with the strong regular season.
The Bears enter the championships with the top times in the women's 4x400 relay and men's medley distance relay. The women posted a time of 3:48.16 at the Tyson Invite to enter seeded first for the 4x400 while the men set a school record in the medley distance at the Carolina Challenge with a 10:11.94.
UNC's men's 4x400 team turned in the second-best time of the year in the Big Sky at the Tyson Invitational as well. They earned the second seed with a time of 3:16.56.
The championships begin on Wednesday with the heptathlon and pentathlon. Graduate Student Mackenzie Pettit recorded the second-highest pentathlon score this season with a 3,615 at the Air Force Invitational. Her score broke the school record.
A pair of women's runners have a pair of top five qualifying times for the season in Semaye Johnson in the 60 hurdles and Kelsi Schutez in the 200m. Johnson in the third seed with a time of 8.76 and Schutez ran the 200m in 24.84.
In the field events, Nene Phenix, Kylie Chavez and Tyler Thimensen enter with the top five jumps. Phenix is tied for the second-best high jump in the conference at 1.71m (5' 7.25"). Chavez enters the women's long jump seeded fifth after her best mark of 5.66m (18' 7"). Thimensen has the fifth-best men's triple jump with the mark of 14.54m (47' 8.5").
