GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado was neck and neck with Abilene Christian in the early parts of Friday's matchup. The Bears couldn't quite keep pace, falling, 81-61, to the Wildcats.
Head coach Jenny Huth's squad came ready to play against the full-court press from ACU. Alisha Davis and Alecia Whyte led the early efforts as the Bears were 7-of-11 from the floor in the first quarter and trailed by just a single point, 18-17.
The Wildcats, however, started to create some distance from Northern Colorado in the second quarter. Hitting five threes and shooting 64 percent from the field, ACU turned on the jets.
UNC's freshmen did play a vital role in tonight's contest. Washington native Olivia Wikstrom dialed up her best performance so far in the Blue and Gold. Pouring in 17 points and grabbing three rebounds, Wikstrom was on the floor for a career-high 24 minutes.
Hannah Simental picked up her third start at Northern Colorado. Coming off an excellent performance against Denver, Simental finished with six points but was a key defensive figure in her 31 minutes.
In the third quarter, sophomore forward Alisha Davis continued to put her stamp on the game. For the second straight game, the preseason All-Big Sky Team member finished in double figures, tonight with a team-high 19. Davis also collected a team-leading 8 rebounds.
Before exiting the game, Alecia Whyte also jumped into double figures with 11 points, one shy of tying her career-high. The Houston native did tie her career-high in rebounds with five.
The game slowed down in the final 10 minutes and though UNC earned a few more second-chance opportunities, Abilene Christian's sustained effort from beyond the arc kept their lead intact. The Wildcats inevitably sealed the victory, 81-61.
