UNC all-time leading scorer Savannah Smith signed to play professionally in Madrid, Spain
GREELEY – Former Northern Colorado guard Savannah Smith is headed to Spain to start her professional career, playing for Club Estudiantes in Madrid.
Club Estudiantes competes in one of the top leagues in all of Europe in Liga Feminina 2.
"I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to continue my basketball career professionally," Smith said. "I am looking forward to being able to push myself to grow not only as a basketball player but as a person all while getting the chance to see the world!"
Smith can lean on her former head coach Jenny Huth who played for Club Estudiantes following her career at Colorado.
"It's an awesome opportunity for Savannah. I think she will love the city of Madrid and they will love her back. She is a dynamic scorer and they love players with that ability in Europe," Huth said. "The club she is playing for has had some players like her in the past that will help her boost the image of the American players.
"She is great in the pick and roll which fits the style of play that they like to play over there and her scoring ability is going to be huge for them because they always want their Americans to score points. For her to continue her career is fantastic. She is definitely a professional player and I am glad she now has the opportunity. I think she can be special and make a great impact."
Smith left Northern Colorado as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,013 points, as well as atop the made 3-point shots list with 300. During her four year career with the Bears, she was the 2018 Colorado Sportswomen of the Year for College Basketball, 2017-18 Big Sky MVP, 2018 Big Sky Tournament MVP and a three-time first team All-Big Sky selection.
She had an outstanding senior season when she averaged 22.8 points, 4.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 steals. Smith was named Big Sky Player of the Week six times. She also set the program record for points in a single game (40) and 3-pointers (9).
