Northern Colorado's second game was suspended for darkness
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado softball loves the underdog role in the Big Sky Tournament, as the Bears pulled off another upset on Wednesday. UNC, the No. 6 seed, defeated the No. 3 seeded Montana Grizzlies, 1-0. Play was suspended in the Bears second game of the day against the No. 2 seed, Idaho State, due to darkness.
Bears vs. Grizzlies
Valerie Vidal looked to use last year's experience in the Big Sky Tournament to power another postseason run for UNC. Vidal faced Montana's Coleen Driscoll, who the Bears faced twice in the regular season series two weeks ago.
UNC wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning. Mady Young singled with one out and then advanced to second on a fly-out. Dani Young came up with the clutch, two-out single to left field that scored Mady Young.
The run proved to be all the support Vidal needed, as the senior was masterful in the circle for UNC. Vidal allowed only four hits in a complete game shutout, her second of the season and ninth career.
Montana was close to breaking through in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Vidal would strike out the next Grizzly to get out of the jam and hold the 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Vidal retired Montana's batters in order to complete the upset. Vidal picked up her ninth win of the season, while striking out six and walking only two.
Bears vs. Bengals-In Progress
UNC and Idaho St. are tied at one in the top of the ninth inning, before the game was called due to darkness.
Valerie Vidal is in the process of another outstanding performance on the mound, with eight shutout innings. Vidal has allowed one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking three.
The Bears scored in the top of the first inning on an Emma Brockmann RBI single that scored Cheyenne Talmadge.
Idaho St. tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run from Haley Harrison.
Picking Back Up Tomorrow
The game will resume tomorrow at 10 am MST, currently in the top of the ninth, with Talmadge and Mady Young on base and two outs in the inning.
Darkness became a factor partially due to three-of-the-four tournament games going to extra innings today, including 10 and 11 inning contests. In the previous six seasons, there had been two extra-inning games during the BIg Sky Tournament.
If UNC wins the game they will play the No. 1 seed, Weber State, at 5 pm. A loss will have the Bears face No. 4 seeded Sacramento State at 2:30 pm.
