PHOENIX, Ariz. – Trailing 4-3 in the eighth Adrian Vela came to the plate to lead off and did so with a bang. His solo home run tied the game. Each team had their chances in the ninth inning, but the game went to extra innings before the Lopes could cash in an opportunity. GCU won on a walk-off double, 5-4.
With two down in the ninth, UNC loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single, Vela who drove in three of the Bears four runs needed to drive in four, but the game remained tied headed to the bottom of the inning.
UNC had an even better bases-loaded chance in the seventh. Two more base on balls sandwiched around a Tyler Yamaguchi double put three on with just one out. A pitching change changed the flow of the inning and the Bears weren't able to cash in the chance.
The Bears hung a three-spot in the sixth to get back into the game. Jack Pauley and Sam Leach reached with just one out and Vela drove in the first two of his runs. He stole second and scored on an error later in the inning.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
- Vela had a single, home run, 3RBI and scored two runs.
- Zoba had two hits and a double.
- Leach had a pair of base hits.
