UNC men's golfer Joshua Matz sits a stroke out of first place at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Competing for the second time in two weeks Northern Colorado men's golf sits in a tie for ninth after the first 36 holes of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Arizona. Joshua Matz led the team by shooting a 7-under, 137. The team overall sits at 577 after the first day.
Matz came out firing in the first round with a birdie on his first hole and sitting at 3-under through the first nine holes. He ended his first 18 at that same 3-under after placing six birdies on his scorecard. Matz improved by a shot his second time around the course with a 4-under 68. In the round, he had another five birdies and an eagle. He trails John Murdock of Wyoming and Cole Madey of UCLA by a stroke for first place.
While Matz, sits in a tie for third, the rest of the team looks to make improvements from day one of the tournament. Li Chen and Jack Castiglia tied to turn in the next best score for the team at 146 by shooting identical 71s and 75s on the day.
The Bears will enter Tuesday tied with Utah Valley for ninth and five strokes behind host Wyoming for eighth.
Prenzlow's perspective
Joshua was superb today. He played with composure and confidence. As a team we are making small mistakes here and there, then have to make up for them. As I told them, all is fine but we need to put ourselves in a better position when we miss greens in regulation. Tomorrow we need to come out and play Bear Golf. We are really not at all playing poorly, but if we are to get better it's about the little things.
What's ahead
Northern Colorado aims to extend its top 10 team finish streak to 13 tournaments during Tuesday's final round starting at 8:30 am MDT.
