Both UNC's men's golf team and Joshua Matz sit in first place after first day of Big Sky Championship
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Northern Colorado men's golf team began the 2019 Big Sky Championship at Boulder Creek Golf Course in Boulder City, Nev. by shooting a 3-under, 285 on Friday. The score puts the Bears in first place by three-strokes over Hartford and Southern Utah. Three Bears shot under par for the day in Joshua Matz, Coby Welch and Jack Castiglia.
Two-time Big Sky Golfer of the Year Joshua Matz is in a three-way tie for first on the individual leaderboard with his 3-under, 69 in the opening round. He shot a 3-under, 33 on the front nine with birdies on the second, fifth and ninth hole. Adding three straight birdies on holes 13-15, Matz ended up with an even-par 36 on the back nine.
One-strokes behind Matz is Coby Welch who shot an opening round 2-under, 70. He came out and birdied three of his first six holes of the day, before making the turn at 1-under, shooting a 35 on the front nine. Playing consistent golf on the back nine, Welch birdied the 13th whole while making par on the rest. Welch sits in a tie for fourth entering tomorrow's second round.
Competing in his first ever Big Sky Championship, Jack Castiglia shot a 1-under, 71. He was able to bounce back from an early double bogey to be even by the turn. Like Welch, he made par on every hole but the 13th on the back nine, which he birdied, to come in with a 35 and overall score of 71. He is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard.
Li Chen and Nick Sharp are also competing in the tournament for UNC, shooting an opening round 75 and 76, respectively.
Prenzlow's Perspective
"We got out to a good start today, but had a few hiccups coming in, but that's going to happen in this game. Our lag putting seemed a little bit off, so I look for that to improve as the weekend progresses. Joshua was awesome today playing consistent golf. Coby stayed in there as well and played a lot of great golf, and our rookie Jack Castiglia did a great job after an early double bogey to rebound and finish under par."
