Four Bears shoot under-par to extend lead at Big Sky Championship
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Northern Colorado men's golf extended its lead at the Big Sky Championships on Saturday by shooting an 11-under 277. The Bears lead Hartford by 11 strokes entering Sunday's final round. It is the best score shot at the Big Sky Championship since 2015. Four Bears ended up under par for the day led by Coby Welch's 4-under, 68. Joining him under par were Coby Welch, Li Chen and Jack Castiglia.
Welch, shot two-under on both the front and back nine, accumulating six birdies along the way. Through two days of the tournament Welch sits at 6-under, 138 for the tournament to be in a three-way tie for first place with Jake Vincent of Southern Utah and Elias Gross of Hampton.
Both Jack Castiglia and Li Chen shot 3-under 69s on Saturday. Castiglia sits in a tie for fourth for the tournament at 4-under, 140. After shooting a 1-over, 37 on the front nine a 20-foot eagle putt on the 13th hole sparked a strong close for the freshman. He added in a par on 14 and 17 to shoot 4-under, 32 on the back nine.
Chen moved back to even par for the tournament with his 69 during the second round. He played bogey free golf for the day making birdies on holes 2, 11 and 18. He will enter tomorrows round in a tie for 14th place.
Joshua Matz joins teammate Castiglia in the tie for fourth at 140 for the tournament after shooting a 1-under 71 Saturday. He came out and scorched the front nine with four birdies for a 4-under, 36.
Nick Sharp sits in 28th going into the final round after 75 on Saturday to bring his two round total to 151.
Prenzlow's perspective
"It was another great day for the Bears. The guys did a good job eliminating bogeys other than a couple coming in that kept us from shooting a great round. Our freshman in Jack Castiglia is out there competing and something to watch. Then Li Chen has a bogey free round which is great to see. Joshua had a few miscues coming in today, but is still right there in contention for tomorrow and Coby was consistent throughout again today. All we have to do tomorrow is play Bear golf again. We won't be talking about winning or losing tonight, but what it's going to take to play a good round."
What's ahead
The Bears look to claim their second straight Big Sky title on Sunday. UNC starts its final round at 9:30 am MDT. Live results of the final round can be found on GolfStat.com.
