Bears drop final BSC match to Sac State
4/21/2019 12:05:00 PM | Men's Tennis
With the Bears needing a win in Sacramento to keep their Big Sky playoff hopes alive, the Sacramento State Hornets extinguished those hopes with a 6-1 win over UNC.
Sac State was able to win the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 court. Tommy Smalley/Kyle Pease dropped their close match 7-5, while Adolfo Arroyo/Michael Kritzinger fell 6-3.
Nick Wade/Julian Kenzlers were able to take a victory in the No. 2 doubles match, defeating their opponents 6-3.
Two of the UNC Bears were forced to retire in the middle of their singles matches due to injury. Adolfo Arroyo retired on the No. 2 court, and Nick Wade retired on the No. 5 court.
The only singles win for the Bears on the day was from Julian Kenzlers in the No. 3 spot. Kenzlers defeated Dom Miller in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to take the win.
After the loss in Sacramento, the Bears will not fall in the top six of the Big Sky rankings, and will not qualify for the 2019 Big Sky Championship in Phoenix. UNC currently sits at No. 8 in the BSC rankings.
The Bears will now travel east on I-80 up to Reno, Nevada where they will complete their road trip, and season, with a match against the University of Nevada Wolfpack.
