UNC men's golf extended its top 10 finish streak to 12 tournaments on Tuesday
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The Northern Colorado men's golf team moved its way up the leaderboard during the final round of the Redhawk Invitational on Tuesday at Chambers Bay Golf Course going from tied for 12th entering the day to finish in seventh place. The top 10 finish is the 12th straight for the team dating back to last season. UNC shot a 3-under 281 in the final round and 4-under 848 for the tournament.
The Bears were led by the duo of Joshua Matz and Li Chen on Tuesday, each shooting 4-under 67s. Matz earned his fourth top 10 individual finish of the season with a 7-under, 206 for the 54-hole tournament to end up in a tie for seventh place. He placed six birdies on his scorecard on Tuesday including opening and closing his round with one.
Chen, who struggled at times o the first day of competition regrouped to match Matz 67 on Tuesday with five birdies and just one bogey. The strong final round helped propel him up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 40th.
One other Bear finished in the top 50 individually in Coby Welch. Welch shot a final round 1-over, 72 and finished with a 2-over, 215 for the tournament.
Prenzlow's Perspective
"Once again this week we played hard and did some really good things. All the guys helped our team score which is a really good sign. Joshua looked comfortable all tournament long. The rest of the guys played well in spurts. We really need to hit on a few more cylinders to get our team scores to where we are capable of playing. As a coach, I really enjoy this team's desire to play well and compete. We need to have a good few days of practice and academics before we head to our next event!"
What's ahead
The Bears jump right back into competition next Monday at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Arizona. The tournament then concludes on Tuesday, April 9.
This is a stretch of play in which UNC plays in four tournaments this month, concluding with the Big Sky Championship over April 26-28.
