Bears rally to halt skid and beat Falcons

UNC and Air Force met for the third time this season and the first in Greeley. The two teams went back-and-forth through the middle innings before the Bears took the lead in the sixth and never gave it back. Matt Burkart led off with a double and came around to score what turned out to be the game-winning run on a pair of throwing errors by the Falcons. The run snapped UNC's four-game slide with a 5-4 win.
The Bears bullpen stepped up to the late innings challenge. Once UNC took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, Matt Boyd and Billy Moreland didn't allow AFA to notch another hit. Boyd came on in the fourth and threw five innings and didn't allow an earned run. Moreland, who played the entire game at short, moved to the bump in the ninth to earn the save with a perfect inning.
Northern Colorado jumped on top in the second inning on a pair of runs highlighted by a Lucas Allen two-out double that scored Quinn Ayers to make it, 2-0.
After Air Force answered back, UNC tied the game in the third on Jake Gitter two-out RBI double. The Bears continued to answer the Falcons in the fourth when Moreland went deep on his second home run of the season to knot the game up at 4-4.
What won't show up in the box score was the outstanding play of the UNC outfield highlighted by Hayden Heinze and Jack Pauley. The freshman, Heinze, got the start in center and made multiple running plays to both gaps that took away what would have been extra-base hits for the Falcons. The senior, Pauley, showed off his glove in one inning making a great running over the shoulder catch going to his right and bumping into the fence. And followed that up by charging into his left and sliding to take away a base hit.

UNC gets back to WAC action on Friday when they start a three-game set against Utah Valley at 2 p.m.

- Gitter accounted for a third of the Bears base hits totaling two of them and an RBI.
- Moreland finished with two runs driven in.
- Out of the six UNC base hits, all but one went four extra bases. Four doubles and the Moreland HR.
- Boyd went five innings, didn't allow an earned run and struck out four to pick up the win.
- Sam Wyatt got the start and went three and K'd four as well.
