Thursday was a busy day for the UNC Bears. Once again, the match came down to the wire, resulting in a come-from-behind win against Nebraska-Omaha 4-3.
The Bears found themselves down 0-3 early against the Mavericks, with Omaha winning the doubles point with wins against Julian Kenzlers/Nick Wade 6-3 on court 2, and another 6-3 win over Kyle Pease/Tommy Smalley in the No. 1 spot.
Omaha carried momentum into singles play, winning on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts and only needing one more win to seal the match. From there on, UNC did not let up. Tommy Smalley got the ball rolling with a win in the No. 6 spot 6-4, 6-1, followed up by Kyle Pease cinching up the three-set win on the No. 1 court 7-6, 1-6, 6-3.
Alex Exsted was able to tie the match up 3-3 when he defeated Davis Lawley in a hard-fought match 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. After dropping the first set, Nick Wade would not be denied the final point for the Bears win. Wade stormed back, winning in three sets to take the match by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
After the win, the Bears had to recharge to take on a tough Mountain West Conference opponent in the University of New Mexico Lobos, who defeated UNC in the evening match of the doubleheader 4-1.
The only point won by the Bears was from doubles, coming from wins in the No. 1 spot by Kyle Pease/Tommy Smalley 6-3 and in the No. 3 spot from Michael Kritzinger/Alex Exsted in a close match 7-6.
Coming down to the end of the season, every match for the UNC Bears is crucial. They will travel to Sacramento with a Big Sky Conference playoff berth on the line when they face off against the Sac State Hornets.
