UNC drops Game 2 to NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After a four-hour American League style slugfest on Friday night, UNC and New Mexico State decided to shake things up and went with a more traditional two-and-a-half-hour National League dual on Saturday. The only problem for the Bears they were on the short end of the NL style game and were kept off the scoreboard in a 5-0 loss.
As depressing as being held scoreless is, the UNC pitching effort was a sight to be held in Game 2. The Aggies lead the nation in runs scored, home runs and hits. Connor Anderson and Sam Wyatt combined to hold them to just five runs on five hits. In their previous 24 games NMSU had only been held to five runs or less six times and three of those came to No. 3 ranked Texas Tech, twice, and Arizona State. They had been held to five hits just four times before Saturday.
For all the talk about a different style of game, it started completely opposite to that. New Mexico State got on the board with what turned out to be the game-winning runs with a three-run home run from Tristan Peterson just four batters into the game.
UNC actually outhit the Aggies, the Bears totaled six but failed to mount a rally.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
- Jake Gitter and Sam Leach each had a pair of hits.
- Jack Pauley had a double to extend his extra-base hit streak.
- Anderson allowed just four hits.
SCHEDULE SAYS
UNC and NMSU close out their weekend series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
