Bears blast three home runs, but see rally fall short

A pair of walks set up NMSU with runners on second and third and just one out to start the eighth inning. With two down, those runners remained in scoring position for freshman designated hitter Kevin Jimenez and he came through with a two-out RBI single that scored Tristan Carranza to make it 10-8 Aggies.
UNC got out of the inning with no further damage and got to work right away in the top of the ninth. They used two base on balls of their own to put the tying run in scoring position with no one out, which allowed Adrian Vela to come through with an RBI base hit to cut the lead in half. The Bears would go on to load the bases but saw the game end on a 4-3 double play.
Northern Colorado grabbed its biggest lead in the sixth after NMSU scored three times in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. The Bears got a pair of singles to start the inning, but with two down they remained at first and second. A walk to Billy Moreland loaded the bases for freshman Lucas Allen who came through with his second and third RBIs of the game. Hayden Heinze scored on a wild pitch and UNC was up 8-5.
New Mexico State came into play as the team leading the county in home runs, but Jack Pauley, Allen and Moreland all hit long balls in the first two innings, which put the Bears first four runs on the board.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
- Pauley finished with the home run and added another RBI.
- Allen had a home run, double and drove in a game-high three.
- Moreland finished with the home run and two RBIs.
- Vela had a pair of knocks and drove in one.
UNC and New Mexico State are right back at it on Saturday at 2 p.m.
