A Tough Start for @BearsSoftball in Lubbock

Northern Colorado went 0-2 in the the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic
LUBBOCK, TX- Northern Colorado softball dropped the first two games of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Bears fell in the first game 4-1 in an extra innings to Jacksonville State and were then defeated by No. 14 Texas Tech 8-0 in five innings.
Bears vs. Gamecocks
Maggie Thurston started for the Bears in the circle to open tournament play and faced off against Jacksonville State's Faith Sims.
Thurston was sharp on the day for UNC, and allowed only a pair of hits through the first three innings.
Sims also sharp for the Gamecocks, allowing no Bears baserunners through the first three innings. Jacksonville State pushed a run across home in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
Valerie Vidal replaced Thurston in the top of the fifth inning to close out the inning.
UNC was threatening in the bottom of the fifth inning as Hailee Swanson reached base on an error. Katie Simonsgaard pinch ran for Swanson and was moved to third base on a sac bun and fielder's choice. Madi Schmidt was now at bat and she delivered a single to left field that scored Simonsgaard and the score was tied.
The Gamecocks put two runners on in the top of the sixth, but Vidal managed to hold them off the scoreboard.
The Bears followed suit and left Dani Young and Mady Young on base in the bottom of the sixth.
Neither team was able to break through in the seventh inning and the game went to extras.
Jacksonville State's Taylor Beshears lead off the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run to break to give the Gamecocks the 2-1 lead. They added two more runs to lead 4-1 over UNC.
The Bears were unable to respond in the bottom of the eighth and Jacksonville State picked up the win.
Vidal was dealt the loss, after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing three earned runs. Sims earned the win after pitching a complete game with one earned run and four hits allowed.
Bears vs. Red Raiders
It was Maggie Thurston starting in the circle for UNC in game two of the day and she threw against Texas Tech's Morgan Hornback.
The Red Raiders scored first in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to center field. They added another run in the bottom of the second with another RBI single.
Texas Tech blew the game open in the bottom of the third with a five-run inning on three hits that put UNC in a 7-0 hole.
The bats for the UNC could not string together enough hits to respond to Red Raiders offense through the first three innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, tacked on another run to extend the lead for Texas Tech to 8-0. UNC would need to score a run in the top of the fifth to keep the game going.
The Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth after Valerie Vidal was hit by a pitch, Cheyenne Talmadge and Emma Brockmann walked. UNC left the bases loaded and Texas Tech won the game 8-0 with the eight run rule in effect.
