EDINBURG, Texas – Down to their final three outs, UNC mounted a rally to send the game to extra innings against University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. UNC got the go-ahead run to second base in the 10th, but after failing to bring him around they saw the Vaqueros load the bases in the bottom half of the inning and walk off with the series opening win, 3-2.
Trailing 2-1 to start the final inning, Sam Leach drew a lead off walk to jump start the rally. He got to third when Hayden Heinze laid down a great bunt that forced a throwing error, which allowed Leach to take the extra base. On a 3-2 pitch Jake Gitter delivered the game-tying run with a single and moved Heinze to third. UNC wasn't able to advance the runners with no out and went to the bottom of the inning still tied.
A two-out single from Adrian Vela got the Bears going in the extra inning, he stole second and was there with two outs. Northern Colorado couldn't bring the pinch runner Braxton Inniss home and went to the bottom of the 10th still knotted up.
UTRGV got the first three on bases before a strikeout put the Bears just two outs away from the 11th. Christian Sepulveda had other ideas and shot a ball threw the drawn in infield that delivered the Vaqueros the win in Game 1 of the series.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
Due to potential severe weather on Sunday, the series will come to an end on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
