It took extra innings to decided the game between Northern Colorado and Colorado State
Valerie Vidal was in the circle to start for UNC, as CSU sent Bridgette Hutton to face her.
Vidal was in command to start out, allowing the Rams only two hits through the first four innings.
In the bottom of the third, Katie Simonsgaard reached to start the inning on a Rams' fielding error. After moving to second base, Mady Young fired a single into center field to bring Simonsgaard into score. UNC had a 1-0 lead.
CSU would tie the game in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly and the game was knotted at one.
Cheyenne Talmadge single to lead-off the bottom of the fifth and Young walked with one out to put two runners on. The Bears could not take advantage of the opportunity.
Emma Brockmann led-off the bottom of the sixth with a double to left center to put a runner immediately in scoring position. Natalie Joyner would single with one out, but Brockmann was tagged out at home. The Bears did not have to wait long for another opportunity, as Taylor Libby was up at the plate as a pinch hitter. Libby launched a double to left center and Joyner came into scoring, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead in the game.
The Rams would respond in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to tie the game at two. UNC was not able to score in the bottom of the seventh and the game went to extra innings.
Now in extra innings, CSU scored two runs on two hits in the top of the eighth to take control in the game with a 4-2 advantage.
UNC pulled closer with a sacrifice fly from Brockmann that allowed Shaena Robinson to score in the bottom of the eighth. The Bears rally fell short in the inning the CSU won the game 4-3.
Despite a good outing, Vidal suffered the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, in seven innings of work. Hutton earned the win after pitching the full eight innings and allowing three runs, one earned, with seven strikeouts.
Game Notes
- Six different Bears recorded hits on Tuesday, with Emma Brockmann leading the team with two doubles.
- UNC and CSU combined to leave 14 runners on base.
- Northern Colorado out-hit CSU seven to six in the game.
Up Next
Northern Colorado will get back on the road and travel to play a three-game series against Portland State, Friday through Saturday this week.
