Northern Colorado men's golf finished tied for fifth at the GCU Invite
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Northern Colorado men's golf earned its fourth top five finish of the season while competing at the Grand Canyon Invitational over the weekend. The Bears finished at even-par for the tournament shooting an 852 over the 54-hole competition. The score earned UNC a tie for fifth with Pacific.
Joshua Matz earned the best individual finish for the team at tied for 19th with a 2-under 211. Following shooting an opening round 74, he shot under par in the final two rounds with a 67 and 70. Matz really took advantage of the par 5s on the course finishing 4-under on those holes throughout the week. He also had two of the team's three eagles at the tournament coming on the par 5 18th in round two and on the par 4 4th during the final round.
Coby Welch ended the tournament by shooting an even-par, 213 at the tournament. He posted a 2-over, 73 in the first round before back-to-back 1-under 70s in the final two rounds. Welch led the team with 12 birdies over the three rounds.
Both Nick Sharp and Li Chen finished inside the top 50 individually by tying for 37th and 48th, respectively.
The second round was the best round for Northern Colorado as they shaved nine strokes off their first round score by shooting a 279. UNC was one of three Big Sky schools to compete in the GCU Invite, finishing the best of the three. Idaho finished 12th, while Sacramento State ended up in 16th place.
Prenzlow's perspective
All in all, it was another good event for Bear Golf! Everyone competed hard and did some good things to help the team! Joshua and Coby were solid the entire event. Li, Nick and Jack all had rounds that helped our team score. With that said, other than a small stretch at the end of yesterday's 36-hole round, where we made a ton of birdies, we were fine but not as sharp as usual. We never looked really comfortable on the greens. This team is really good, we need to keep working on the little stuff to keep lowering our scores.
What's ahead
UNC heads to the Pacific Northwest and US Open course, Chambers Bay for the Redhawk Invitational over April 1 & 2.
