Northern Colorado dropped the final game of the Jeannine McHaney Classic to the host school

LUBBOCK, TX – Northern Colorado softball played its final game in the Jeannine McHaney Classic against host No. 14 Texas Tech. The Red Raiders won the game 7-2 against UNC on Sunday afternoon.

Maggie Thurston started the game against the Red Raiders and faced Morgan Hornback.

The Red Raiders opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with three runs on six hits and aided by a UNC error. Texas Tech piled on in the bottom of the second with two runs on two hits, along with the Bears second error of the game.

In the top of the third, Shaena Robinson lead off with a single to give UNC an early baserunner. Robinson managed to reach third base and would score on a wild pitch from Hornback and the Bears trimmed the lead to 5-1.

After a rocky first two innings, Thurston found her groove and pitched three scoreless innings against the high-powered, Red Raider offense.

Cheyenne Talmadge would further close the gap against Texas Tech with an RBI single through the right side that scored Emma Brockmann. The lead was down to 5-2 as the Bears clawed closer.

Texas Tech would get the runs back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two run on one hit to build a 7-2 advantage over UNC.

Now in the top of the seventh, the Bears loaded the bases after Brockmann had a lead-off walk. Talmadge would single with one out and

Mady Young draw a two-out walk. UNC missed on the comeback and the Red Raiders won the game 7-2.

Thurston took the loss, despite all seven of the Texas Tech runs being unearned.

Game Notes

Emma Brockmann had a strong weekend at the plate, batting .400 with three RBIs and one run scored. Brockmann also had a double and a triple during the games, along with two walks.
Cheyenne Talmadge batted .357 with four runs scored, and one RBI, while also walking three times.
Mady Young batted a solid .273, with three runs scored and five RBIs in the five games. Young recorded her first triple of the season and walked six times.
Maggie Thurston pitched a team-high 14.2 innings, while striking out five with only one walk.

Northern Colorado will play its final non-conference tournament of the season as they travel to Saint Louis, MO for the Billiken Spring Tournament, hosted by Saint Louis University.
