Regular Season Begins for Northern Colorado

UNC hosts San Francisco at Bank of Colorado Arena
After a commanding win over Regis in an exhibition game, Northern Colorado opens its regular season schedule against San Francisco on Tuesday night.
Tickets for the game start as low as $8 for adults and $5 for youth. Tickets can be purchased by ordering online at uncbears.com/wbbtix, over the phone at 970.351.4849 or in-person at the UNC Campus Commons. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
UNC dominated the Rangers this past Friday, winning 93-42. The Bears shot 53% from the field and had three players in double-figures. Kadie Deaton debuted with a game-high 21 points and earned the double-double with 10 rebounds. Alexis Chapman added 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Alecia Whyte scored 13 points off the bench and grabbed three rebounds as well. Ali Meyer finished with nine boards and four points to start her final season.
In the preseason polls, Northern Colorado was picked fifth by the media and sixth by the coaches. UNC received four first-place votes in the media poll with 131 total points. The Bears had 57 points in the coaches poll with no first-place votes.
Head Coach Jenny Huth had a successful first season leading the UNC basketball program. Northern Colorado finished second in the Big Sky and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament, narrowly missing an appearance in the finals with a loss to Eastern Washington, 59-57. Huth and the Bears defended home court in the 2018-19 season, going 10-3 at Bank of Colorado Arena. In her first year at the helm, Huth went 21-11 overall and earned an appearance in the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
Northern Colorado returns three starters from the 2018-19 team and six letterwinners overall. Coach Huth delivered a talented and deep recruiting talent, bringing six new Bears to Greeley for the 2019-20 season.
Fans saw a sneak peek of the new Bears, as the team traveled to Taiwan for the Foguang Cup University Basketball Invitational. The tournament was held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from July 14-23. UNC went 3-2 during the trip, playing in the semifinals.
Against Nagoya Gakuin University, UNC's freshman guard duo of Deaton and Jasmine Gayles dazzled with 18 points each. Alisha Davis scored 12 points and had nine rebounds in the team's win over National University. Meyer posted 13 rebounds and Champan scored 21 points in the team's win over National Taiwan Normal University. Deaton, Davis and Kurstyn Harden would each score in double-digits against Taiwan Normal as well.
Northern Colorado will look to start the regular season on the right foot against San Francisco for the third conseutive season.
Scouting the Dons
San Francisco had a rough 2018-19 season, going 7-24 and 2-16 in the West Coast Conference. The Dons did beat Portland in the West Coast Conference Tournament, 76-69. They would fall in their next game against Loyola Marymount, 66-45. San Francisco scored over 100 points in both of its exhibition games, defeating San Francisco State, 105-70, and Chico State, 105-68.
UNC had a comeback win against the Dons last season with a 68-63 win in San Francisco. Alexis Chapman tied for the game-high 29 points and Ali Meyer finished with 17 rebounds.
Following the Bears
Northern Colorado will host San Francisco in Bank of Colorado Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with tip-off scheduled for 7 pm. The game will be streamed live on PlutoTV (Ch. 541) and live stats can be viewed through UNCBears.com.
