Northern Colorado will make its first appearance in the national tournament since 2015
After winning the Big Sky Tournament, Northern Colorado soccer will play Colorado in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. UNC will make the trip down the road to Boulder to play the Buffs on Nov. 16 with kickoff scheduled for noon on Saturday.
The game will be played at Prentup Field. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for youth. CU and UNC students are $6 with a student ID. Purchase tickets online by clicking here.
"I think the biggest thing for this week of training was work on a few things for CU, but give the players some rest," head coach Tim Barrera said. "Practices have been fairly short and we're trying to keep them sharp moving forward and ready for the big game on Saturday. Everybody understands the importance of the game. We're fortunate that we're playing a team we have already played on field we have already played on."
The Bears automatically qualified for the national tournament after defeating the third seed, Eastern Washington, 1-0 in the conference tournament. The Bears won the tournament as the number four seed, defeating the top-seed, Montana 2-1 and the five seed, Northern Arizona, 2-1, both in overtime.
UNC is riding the momentum from the conference tournament with some impressive performances. Taylor Bray was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after scoring two goals, both of which were game winners. Ashley Franza had a breakout tournament, saving 12 shots and allowing only two goals in 282 minutes played.
Barrera and UNC automatically qualify for their second trip the NCAA Division I Tournament. Barrera also guided the Bears to the NCAA Tournament twice before the program reclassified to Division 1.
Scouting the Buffs
Colorado finished the regular season with an 11-7-2 overall record, with a 3-6-2 record in the Pac-12. CU dropped its regular season finale against Utah, 1-0. The Buffs had three players earn all-conference recognition. Senior midfielder Taylor Kornieck was named to the first team all-conference and senior goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins was named to the second team. Forward Tessa Barton earned a spot on the All-Freshman team.
This will be the second matchup between UNC and CU in 2019, as the two teams met on pitch back in September. The Buffs, ranked No. 34 at the time, won the game 4-0 over the Bears in the Colorado Cup.
"I think both teams have put in quite a few games from their conference season," Barrera said. We had some injured players in the first game, but so did they. I think both teams are fairly healthy so its should be a good matchup."
