Northern Colorado fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Colorado
BOULDER – The 2019 season ended on Saturday for Northern Colorado soccer, as the team fell to Colorado, 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buffs had an advantage in possession, 60% to 40% that limited the Bears opportunities.
"The challenge is not for the second time; it's for the Buffs and what they present," head coach Tim Barrera said. "We knew we were going to have to defend. Once we got forward, we were going to have take our chances. Today we didn't take our chances. We had opportunities to get serves in and we didn't do that"
Colorado recorded 24 shots in the game, while UNC had six for the game.
In the first half, Olivia Seddon fired off two quick shots and UNC had seized the early momentum. CU would settle down and begin to control the ball. The Buffs scored in the 29th minute on a goal from a Libby Geraghty. The Buffs scored their second goal in the 34th minute after they were awarded a penalty kick. Taylor Korneick converted the opportunity to build a 2-0 advantage.
Coming out of halftime, CU struck fast, scoring in the 47th minute on a goal from Roo Yarnell Williams.
UNC tried to create more opportunities in the half, but could not keep the ball in the Buffs defensive zone for long.
The Buffs piled on with goals in the 68th, 84th and 87th minute.
UNC concluded it's season with an 9-11-4 overall record. The Bears claimed the Big Sky Tournament title at Jackson Stadium earlier this month.
"There is a lot of talent all over Colorado and I've played with a lot players who have gone on to play for Power 5 times."
"It was fantastic year to host the conference tourney to play three games in five days," Barrera added. "We challenged the players early on with power 5 matchups. I think that helped us get through the conference tournament and get us to play here in Boulder."
